Porchester Community School, Portsmouth

Client: Hampshire County Council

Background

The courtyard area of the school surfaces following sustained and heavy use over many years had broken down and become uneven. The soft landscaping was sparse and in poor condition.

The surface water from both the courtyard as well as the roof downpipes needed to addressed.

Scandor submitted a tender for the works and were awarded the contract in the summer of 2016.

The Scheme was submitted for a BALI Award (British Association of Landscape Industries) in the ‘Community & schools Development’ category. The submission was successful.

Our Role

Scandor were appointed as main contractor for the project which commenced in July 2016. Works consisted of the following:

  • Breaking out of existing concrete and macadam surfaces
  • Clearance of existing planting
  • Construction of a large soakaway
  • Installation of drainage
  • Installation of permeable surfaces – resin, macadam
  • Resin bonded and artificial grass surfaces
  • Shrub planting

Challenges

The waste & materials all had to be brought in and out through very limited access.

The client had a limited budget, Scandor worked very closely to offset additional costs in certain areas by changes to other aspects of the scheme.
